Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Welcome to EYFS
At Fishwick, we want children’s first experiences of school to be happy, exciting and full of opportunities to explore. Our Nursery and Reception children learn through a mixture of purposeful play, adult-led teaching, stories and hands-on experiences.
Learning Through Play
Play is an important part of learning in EYFS. Children learn by building, creating, talking, investigating, pretending, moving and exploring.
We have access to our outdoor provision every day and children will often take part in messy play. These experiences are an important part of learning and help children develop their creativity, confidence, physical skills and understanding of the world.
Please send a change of clothes to keep in school and, if possible, a pair of named wellies.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is carefully planned to build children’s knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all seven areas of the EYFS.
High-quality stories are at the heart of much of our learning. We teach early reading and phonics through Red Rose Letters and Sounds and develop early mathematical understanding through Mastering Number.
Children learn about themselves, their community and the wider world through a wide range of topics, stories and experiences throughout the year.
Reading in Reception
Reception children should bring their book bag to school every day so that reading books and other materials can be sent between home and school.
Reading regularly together at home is a really important part of learning to read.
Snack Time
We provide toast, fruit and milk for children during the school day.
Uniform and Belongings
Children wear our school uniform each day.
Please put your child’s name in all clothing, particularly jumpers and cardigans, as these can easily become mixed up.
Children should also have:
- a change of clothes kept in school
- named wellies if possible
- their book bag every day if they are in Reception
Working With Families
We value working closely with our families and will share children’s learning and important information throughout the year.
