All about Maths at fishwick

At Fishwick, we believe in developing a positive attitude and love for learning for Maths. We hope to raise the profile of Mathematics through links with Computing and other curriculum areas such as Science and PE. We endeavour to make our Maths curriculum exciting and include aspects of enquiry to enable our children to become independent learners.

Teaching and Learning

Our aim at Fishwick Primary is to ensure that all children become fluent, can reason and explain mathematically, and are able to solve problems as well as to foster an enthusiasm and fascination about maths.

To do this, we teach maths through a mastery approach which we are implementing in conjunction with our local Maths Hub.

What is teaching for mastery?

"Mastering maths means pupils of all ages acquiring a deeplong-termsecure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced materia"l (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics).

Elements of classroom practice and school organisation are based on The 5 Big Ideas:

Teachers consider each element in the designing of their lessons to secure the best possible outcomes of the children. An insight into the thought process of designing a lesson can be found below.

We are also taking part in the Mastering Number at KS1 project; a project that aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.

Times Tables

Knowing your times tables  are an important part of children’s mathematical knowledge and are useful for children to help develop their fluency in other areas such as calculations and problem solving. Learning your times tables can not only help children with their Maths skills but it can also be great fun too!
The lowdown:
End of KS1: 2s, 5s and 10s
End of Year 3: 3s, 4s and 8s
End of Year 4: Up to their 12 x tables
Year 5 and 6 should be revising their times tables knowledge and division facts up to their 12 x tables.
