PE & Sport Premium for Primary Schools

What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to the primary school to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and Sport that is offered. This means it should be used to develop or add to the PE and Sport activities that school already offers. As well as make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

Purpose of the funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses of the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs

PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of Fishwick Primary School. Every child has at least two hours per week that is dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.
